The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales by Jon Scieszka and illustrated by Lane Smith
Selected Characters: Jack the Narrator and The Giant, Cinderella and Rumpelstiltskin,
The Stinky Cheese Man and Sly Fox
Design Statement: This story book draws from classic fairy tale stories but with a humorous and unsettling twist. I wanted to take this one step further with adapting this book into a play. Scale is emphasized in this adaptation by using puppetry and masked performers. Heavily influenced by Unsuk Chin’s Alice in Wonderland 2007 Opera, this show is full of horror, fantasy, and humor.

Black Super Hero Magic Mama by Inda Craig-Galván
Selected Characters: The Heroes and Villians
Design Statement: After her son is killed by a police officer, Sabrina enters into a state of depression. She transports herself into a different world to try and deal with these emotions. Grief and the imagery of her being covered in her own son’s
blood was my leading thread in designing this show. Because Sabrina has seen her son’s dead body, I wanted to capture the horrors of the images in her mind as she enters the comic book world that her son loved.

Macbeth by William Shakespeare
Selected Characters: The Band and The Witches
Design Statement:
Macbeth centers around corruption of power and unchecked ambition. In a moder day where we look to celebrities as moral leaders, often fame and power can drive a person to have toxic morals.
In this verison of Macbeth, power is explored through the struggles of addiction and absuing fame as a metalhead figure as well as how women are made to navigate this male dominated field.

Concerning Strange Devices from the Distant West by Naomi Iizuka
Selected Characters: Kiku and Hiroko
Design Statement: Can you ever know the truth of another person? Can you ever know the truth of what happened? Can you trust your perceptive faculties? These are all questions the playwright, Naomi Iizuka, poses about her work. These questions speak strongly to this play which discuss desire, perception, and the mystery of time.
These are the main ideas that directed me throughout this design process. The imagery of the play speaks to these ideas through the images of Hiroko, photographs, cicadas, mirrors, and so on. I wanted to explore how these two time periods connect and how to start to answer these questions the playwright poses.
